For his Hyperion debut, pianist Luís Duarte records works by a major figure of 20th-century Portuguese music: Fernando Lopes-Graça. This music from 1950s Portugal explores a wide range of styles, moods and influences: 11 ‘Glosses’ on traditional Portuguese songs, re-working folk songs local to various regions of Portugal, and 5 Lullabies, three of which are world-premiere recordings. This, then, is an ‘Album for the young pianist’, stylistically similar to Bartók’s Mikrokosmos but with a pedagogical aim.
